How useful is non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT)?
Last update 09/27/2024 - 17:58
Many expectant mothers have heard of NIPT, a simple yet highly effective blood test.
Dr. Nguyen Huu Nghi, Obstetrics & Gynecology Department at Hanoi French Hospital says: "NIPT is a non-invasive prenatal screening test, performed from the 10th week of pregnancy, to assess the risk of genetic abnormalities. It is highly accurate and completely safe for both mother and baby."
🍀 Compared to traditional screening, NIPT offers superior effectiveness:
- High accuracy: with NIPT, there is no need for additional screening.
While accuracy of the double test is about 85% and the triple test 69%, NIPT offers 99% accuracy.
- In addition to Down Syndrome, NIPT can detect many other congenital abnormalities, sex chromosome abnormalities, and more
️🍀 To ensure the healthy development of the child, it is extremely important to perform prenatal screening tests. The NIPT screening test should be considered by expectant mothers.
In certain cases, NIPT screening is highly recommended:
- Older expectant mothers (35 years old and above)
- Expectant mothers with a high BMI (30 and above)
- Mothers using assisted reproductive techniques such as IVF
- History of children with congenital abnormalities
- Family history of congenital abnormalities and genetic disorders
- Ultrasound or other prenatal tests with issues
After undergoing NIPT screening, mothers should still have regular check-ups and ultrasounds for comprehensive monitoring
