NOTES FOR CARDIOVASCULAR PATIENTS DURING THE NEW YEAR TRAVEL SEASON
Last update 01/23/2025 - 10:39
The early months of the new year are often a time for family reunions, short trips, or enjoying the scenic spring landscapes. However, for cardiovascular patients, long trips or changes in climate can pose significant health challenges.
Dr. Ngo Chi Hieu, from the Clinical and Interventional Cardiology Department at Hanoi French Hospital, shares that while extra caution is necessary, cardiovascular patients can still enjoy a safe holiday if they prepare well and prioritize their health.
Here are some key points for patients to consider:
Choose the right destination
Patients should be aware that traveling to high-altitude destinations above 2,000 meters above sea level can pose health risks. Thin air at high altitudes can reduce oxygen levels in the blood, causing shortness of breath or triggering chest pain.
Additionally, avoid areas with extreme weather conditions. Cold weather can constrict blood vessels, leading to increased blood pressure and a higher risk of heart attack. Conversely, excessively hot weather can result in dehydration, electrolyte imbalances, and added strain on the heart.
Check your health and consult your doctor before traveling
If you’ve recently experienced cardiovascular events such as a heart attack, heart surgery, or a hospital stay, consult your doctor to assess your health before planning a trip.
Patients with hypertension or heart failure may require additional tests or medication adjustments to ensure their condition remains stable during the trip.
Prepare necessary medications and medical supplies
Bring an adequate supply of prescribed medications and any additional drugs recommended by your doctor for emergency use.
For international travel, carry your prescriptions translated into local language for reference if needed.
Patients with pacemakers or defibrillators should carry their device identification card and inform security staff when passing through airport screening.
Lifestyle tips while traveling
- Limit salty, sugary, or fatty foods, especially festive dishes. Instead, prioritize foods rich in potassium, fiber, and omega-3 to support heart health.
- Engage in light physical activities such as walking, yoga, or deep breathing exercises. Avoid overexertion, particularly activities like hiking or long-distance walking.
- Stay hydrated, especially in hot weather or during frequent travel.
Dr. Hieu emphasizes that cardiovascular patients often overlook abnormal symptoms, attributing fatigue or shortness of breath to travel activities. Patients should listen to their bodies and not ignore any warning signs, no matter how minor. Both patients and their families should pay attention to symptoms such as chest pain, palpitations, shortness of breath, dizziness, or swollen legs. Seek immediate medical assistance or contact a doctor if these occur.
Wishing you and your family a joyful and healthy spring holiday!
