OPEN FRACTURES - EMERGENCY TREATMENT TO AVOID PAIN AND COMPLICATIONS
Last update 09/27/2024 - 17:58
An open fracture, also known as a compound fracture, is a type of fracture where the broken bone is exposed with the external environment through an open wound. The fractured bone's end may be visible through the wound, or it may not be protruding but show signs of hematoma and bone marrow extravasation. In some cases, the wound may appear small and thus requires close attention.
Open fractures can present with varying degrees of severity. Common clinical manifestations include:
Visibly broken bone in proximity to the wound.
The possibility of bone ends protruding through the wound.
If soft tissues, such as blood vessels and nerves, are involved, additional symptoms of paresthesia, loss of sensation, and absent pulse may be observed.
According to Dr. Cao Manh Lieu, with many years of experience in the field of Orthopedics & Traumatology, at Hanoi French Hospital: "Injuries resulting from motorcycle accidents often involve open fractures (bleeding near the open wound). It is necessary to promptly transfer the patient to the nearest medical facility in order to:
Control the bleeding
Assess for any nerve or blood vessel damage
Avoid delayed treatment which can lead to complications such as infection, bone inflammation, delayed bone healing, or non-healing, and in complicated cases, it may threaten the preservation of the limb.
