SAFE PREGNANCY MANAGEMENT FOR EXPECTANT MOTHERS WITH HEART CONDITIONS AT HFH
Last update 12/28/2024 - 11:51
Physiological changes during pregnancy, such as increased blood volume, heart rate, and cardiac output, can exacerbate cardiovascular issues in patients with heart failure, valvular heart disease, congenital heart defects, arrhythmias, etc., leading to dangerous complications that may threaten the lives of both the mother and the fetus.
Dr. Pham Thu Thuy, Clinical and Interventional Cardiology Department, Hanoi French Hospital (HFH), shared: “Women with cardiovascular conditions need comprehensive evaluation before pregnancy and close monitoring by a multidisciplinary team throughout the pregnancy to ensure the safety of both the mother and the baby.”
Specifically, collaboration among obstetricians, cardiologists, anesthesiologists, neonatologists, and hematologists is essential to:
- Conduct a comprehensive risk assessment for the mother and fetus and develop a detailed pregnancy monitoring plan
- Adjust cardiac medications to manage the mother’s condition while avoiding adverse effects on the fetus
- Detect and manage complications such as arrhythmias, heart failure, and preeclampsia early, especially in the later stages of pregnancy
- Monitor fetal development and screen for genetic conditions
- Provide timely interventions in emergency situations
- Determine the optimal time for delivery, closely monitor labor, and promptly address potential complications during childbirth
- Manage and address postpartum issues for both mother and baby
