The importance of Corneal Topography in Ortho-K Use
Last update 09/27/2024 - 17:58
According to Dr. Nghiêm Thị Thu Trang, an experienced doctor who has performed nearly 2,000 Ortho-K procedures in the Ophthalmology at Hanoi French Hospital: “The cornea is a transparent, dome-shaped structure at the front of the eye that helps focus light onto the retina—the light-receiving area at the back of your eye. The cornea accounts for about two-thirds of the eye's focusing power and plays a critical role in helping us see clearly.”
- To fit Ortho-K lenses, eye care specialists take corneal topography images and measure the surface parameters of your cornea using an instrument called a corneal topographer, and then design a customized lens specifically for your cornea
- Corneal topography, a non-invasive imaging technique, provides detailed information about the curvature of the cornea. This data helps create lenses tailored to the exact corneal structure of each patient
- Corneal topography can also detect the specific curvature or abnormal corneal shapes that might affect vision, such as keratoconus, a condition that can lead to blurred or double vision. Additionally, this imaging reveals information about dry eye, corneal scarring, and astigmatic patterns
- Ortho-K lenses work by reshaping the cornea, altering how light is focused as it enters the eye. Most Ortho-K lenses are worn overnight during sleep and removed during the day. Since these lenses reshape the corneal epithelial cells, they adjust the curvature of the cornea to improve the patient’s vision. Therefore, corneal topography helps ophthalmologists gather the necessary data to select the most appropriate Ortho-K lenses for each individual
At Hanoi French Hospital, before fitting Ortho-K lenses, each patient undergoes corneal topography using specialized equipment for Ortho-K. Based on the results, an individualized treatment plan tailored to the corneal structure of each patient is developed by experienced doctors, ensuring optimal safety and effectiveness.
Dr. Nghiêm Thị Thu Trang, with over 15 years of expertise in refractive error examination and myopia control using overnight Ortho-K contact lenses, holds certifications from the American Academy of Orthokeratology and Myopia Control and is a member of the Asia Pacific Ortho-K Academy. She frequently attends international conferences to exchange knowledge and stay updated on the latest treatment methods.
