Hanoi French Hospital tackles kidney stones with latest methods
Last update 09/27/2024 - 17:58
Urinary stones are solid deposits that appear in the urinary system. They are mostly formed in the kidney and then move along the urine tract to other locations, such as the ureter, bladder and urethra. Kidney stones are the most common type, accounting for up to 40%.
According to Dr. Vo Van Quy, a specialist in urological surgery at Hanoi French Hospital, when the stones are small, they do not usually cause much discomfort.
It is only when the stones start moving along the urine flow and rubbing against the urinary tract lining that the patient may feel problems, such as:
- Back pain. The pain usually appears suddenly after movements, with intense pain spreading from the lower back to the groin area. Some patients may only feel a dull, uncomfortable pain in the lower back, which increases with movement.
- Pain during urination. Burning sensation, frequent urination, dribbling, or even blood in the urine, passing stones or pus, cloudy urine with foam, or a foul smell.
The good news is that urinary tract stones can be completely cured. However, if they are not detected and treated properly, they will increase in size and quantity, leading to dangerous complications such as urinary infections, kidney dilatation, chronic kidney inflammation and kidney failure.
There are many modern, minimally invasive surgical treatment methods, each with its own advantages and disadvantages:
👉 Extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy. Waves penetrate the body surface, transmitted in a water environment and converge at the stone, breaking it into small pieces. The fragments are then expelled from the body through medication.
👉 Ureteroscopic lithotripsy. Using a ureteroscope passed from the urethra, through the bladder, and up to the ureter to reach the stone. The doctor then uses lasers to fragment the stone and flushes the pieces out.
👉 Percutaneous nephrolithotomy. This technique creates a small tunnel, about 6 - 10 mm, from outside the skin into the kidney to access the stone. The doctor then uses a laser to break the stone and the fragments are taken out of the body using suction.
👉 Laparoscopic surgery. This minimally invasive method involves stone removal through the retroperitoneum, using a Trocar. This technique has shown superior advantages for cases with upper third ureteral stones or simple renal pelvic stones, when compared to other methods
Depending on the size and shape of the stone, and the condition of each patient, the doctor will prescribe the ideal method.
