Eardrum patch surgery is middle ear surgical treatment which caused by chronic ear inflammation.
Chronic ear inflammatory is latent infection disease at middle ear. This is also the cause of deafness. The disease may be progressive with chronic discharge from the ear due to a perforated eardrum: it can evolve spontaneously towards serious complications.
This medical treatment is initially to reduce maximum infection before designating eardrum surgery patch
The purpose of the intervention is:
- Exploration & cleaning of the middle ear pathology such as inflammation, infections of ear bones or cholestetome
- To improve the hearing the by grafting to the sealing the eardrum and replacing the bones if they are destroyed.
The operation is performed under general anesthesia. The scar is either above or behind the ear. To close the eardrum using either the temporalis muscle fascia (muscle located above the ear) or a vein, or cartilage. To replace the bones, using elements by Teflon or ceramic or fragments of cartilage.
To remove the cholesteatoma, surgeon required to enlarge the cavity of the middle ear to facilitate removal and improve surveillance. The hospitalization time of eardrum surgery patch is about 2 days & post operative care period is approximately 2 weeks.
What is cholesteatoma?
Cholesteatoma is defined as the existence of epidermis, ie skin, inside the cavities of the middle ear, in the middle ear behind the eardrum and or the mastoid.
This accumulation of skin, which looks like a cyst, will gradually grow causing a chronic infection of the middle ear and destruction of bony structures around.
Thus cholesteatoma is characterized as dangerous chronic ear infection.
Cholesteatoma is usually secondary to recurrent ear infections and malfunction of the eustachian tube, but it can also be congenital
What signs of a cholesteatoma?
The two main symptoms that may indicate a cholesteatoma is a purulent yellowish and fetid odor from the ear (called purulent ear inflammation) and/or hearing loss.
Patients can also be noted bleeding, dizziness, facial paralysis, meningitis.
The diagnosis of cholesteatome is usually on the simple clinical examination of the ear that is made by the ENT specialist (ENT) using a microscope.
When the diagnosis was, ENT practice is a measure of hearing (audiogram) and a scan of the ear to specify the extension of cholesteatoma
In general, the diagnosis of chronic ear infection and cholesteatoma more specifically, was asked by the ENT specialist (ENT) is the only one capable of performing the operation of eardrum patch and ensure regular monitoring.
