Definitive Treatment for Sinusitis Based on Its Underlying Cause
Last update 01/20/2025 - 16:46
Sinusitis is a condition that causes discomfort for many patients due to persistent sneezing, difficulty breathing, and frequent headaches, leading to prolonged treatment.
According to Prof. Dr. Vo Thanh Quang, with 45 years of experience in ENT treatment and former President of the Vietnam ENT Society, Sinusitis has various causes, including:
- Viruses: Most sinus infections begin with common cold symptoms. Viruses can inflame nasal tissues, block sinus drainage pathways, and lead to sinusitis. The best prevention for viral sinusitis is similar to cold and flu prevention—annual flu vaccinations.
- Bacteria: If a cold persists for more than 10–15 days, it could be caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae or Haemophilus influenzae bacteria. These bacteria often reside in the nasal passages and can trigger infections when the immune system is compromised, leading to bacterial sinusitis as a complication of the common cold.
- Nasal Polyps: These benign growths in the nasal passages or sinuses can obstruct drainage pathways, trapping mucus and causing sinus infections. Polyps can also limit airflow, cause headaches, and reduce the sense of smell.
- Air Pollution: Polluted air can irritate the nasal passages, leading to inflammation and increasing the risk of sinusitis, particularly for individuals with allergies or asthma.
- Fungal Infections: Aspergillus is a common fungus that causes sinusitis. Weakened immune systems provide an opportunity for fungal growth, especially in moist, dark environments like the sinuses.
- Congenital Nasal Abnormalities: Congenital nasal issues, such as narrow drainage pathways, cleft palate, or deviated nasal septum, increase the risk of sinus infections.
Prof. Quang emphasizes that sinusitis treatment plans must consider numerous factors, particularly the underlying cause and severity of the condition. Depending on the case, doctors may recommend medical therapy, surgical intervention, or a combination of both. Early diagnosis and proper treatment tailored to the root cause can lead to complete recovery from sinusitis.
