Hanoi French Hospital is proud to have an internationally-trained team of specialists, with global experience. One of these incredible team members is anesthesiologist Dr. Masatoshi Tomonari, from Japan.
Dr. Tomonari is a leading expert in anaesthesia and pain management, with 17 years’ experience working in Japan, China, and now Vietnam. He specialises in non-surgical treatment of neck, lower back and shoulder pain, sciatica, spinal and musculoskeletal problems, growing pains, post-operative and cancer pain, and opiate use disorder.
Fluent in Japanese, English, and Chinese, he can effectively communicate and care for international patients from a range of countries. Specifically, as he also the Japanese Liaison Doctor, if you require Japanese language assistance in any of your medical interactions in Hanoi French Hospital, Dr. Tomonari will be your guide throughout your journey.
Speaking about his speciality, Dr. Tomonari had this to say:
“Surgery and invasive examinations are performed for treatment or diagnostic purposes, but they inherently place a burden on the body, such as causing pain. Anaesthesiologists strive to alleviate the painful and distressing experiences during surgery by combining various anaesthesia methods and anaesthetics to ensure that surgeries and invasive examinations can be conducted comfortably.
Each anaesthesia method has its own complications and side effects, and it is necessary to minimize these adverse events. Even with the best current methods, it is impossible to reduce adverse events to zero, which is a limitation of modern medicine, but efforts are continuously made to reduce them.
Surgery and anaesthesia place a burden on the body. Each patient has different physical strengths; some have weak hearts, others have weak kidneys, and some have multiple weakened organs. In such cases, choices are made to minimize the burden on one organ while relying on another to compensate.
Many people think that the job of an anaesthesiologist is to “put patients to sleep,” but it is equally important, if not more so, to safely “wake them up” in the same condition as before they went to sleep.”
Dr. Tomonari started his clinical career in Japan, after graduating there. He has also held key positions such as Director of Anaesthesiology, Assistant Chief Medical Officer, Executive Head of Japanese Business, and Visiting Consultant of the Medical Advisory board, in China.
In addition to his clinical work, he has actively contributed to scientific research, with numerous national and international publications, including “Hemodynamic Management for Renal Transplantation”, and "Post-operative Pain Management after Total Knee Arthroplasty."
