When you should have a endoscopy?
Last update 09/27/2024 - 17:58
A gastrointestinal endoscopy is a procedure that uses an endoscope equipped with a camera and light to examine the interior of the stomach, esophagus, and duodenum, aiming to detect abnormalities such as stomach ulcers, inflammation and infections. It can also be used to diagnose stomach cancer.
Dr. Nguyen Quang Duat, who has 40 years of experience in Gastroenterology & Hepatology at HFH says, "Endoscopy offers many benefits in diagnosing and treating diseases.”
The following groups should consider undergoing a gastrointestinal endoscopy:
• Those experiencing abnormal symptoms such as nausea, upper abdominal pain, vomiting, indigestion, difficulty swallowing, or blood in the stool
• Patients with diseases like chronic gastritis or mild to moderate gastritis.
• Individuals infected with H. pylori bacteria
• People who frequently smoke or consume alcohol, to check for possible conditions like gastritis, polyps, or bowel inflammation
• Individuals with family who have had stomach-related diseases, such as stomach cancer, colon cancer and stomach polyps
• Those who wish to screen for early detection of stomach, esophageal, and colon cancer.
When scheduled for an endoscopy, you will be instructed to fast for at least 6 hours before the procedure. Additionally, you should not consume milk, colored drinks such as fruit juice, soda, or coffee, and limit fiber intake before the procedure. Patients using anticoagulants like Plavix should stop taking them 5 days before the endoscopy or consult a cardiologist.
To ensure the best and safest results, it is advised to undergo stomach the endoscopy in the morning, as overnight fasting helps digest food completely. In cases of pyloric stenosis, patients need to fast for 12 to 24 hours, or undergo stomach pumping before the procedure.
