Influenza Care: First class Emergency Treatment to Western Standards
Last update 12/05/2024 - 10:11
Influenza (flu) is an acute viral infection that occurs when the virus infects the respiratory system, including the nose, throat, bronchial tubes, and sometimes the lungs.
The first common symptom of the flu is a high fever. Those with the flu may also experience one or more of the following symptoms:
- Fever, chills, sweating
- Dry cough, sore throat, stuffy or runny nose
- Headaches
- Fatigue, muscle pain
- Shortness of breath
For most people, the flu is mild, with recovery within 2-7 days. However, for individuals with weakened immune systems or chronic illnesses, it can lead to severe complications and even be life-threatening.
Flu affects people of all ages, with infection rates between 5-10% in adults and 20-30% in children, making it highly contagious and capable of causing widespread outbreaks. Three types of flu viruses affect humans: Influenza A, B, and C.
“If flu symptoms worsen or if a fever persists, you should consult a doctor,” says Dr. Anne Laure Guittonneau, an emergency physician at Hanoi French Hospital.
For individuals with severe infections or at high risk, antiviral medication is essential for treatment. These medications are most effective within 48 hours of the onset of symptoms, helping to reduce the severity and duration of illness.
Recommended antiviral drugs for flu include oseltamivir (Tamiflu), zanamivir (Relenza), and peramivir (Rapivab).
Dr. Guittonneau also emphasizes the importance of seeking emergency care if the patient experiences breathing difficulties, chest pain, loss of consciousness, seizures, or signs of dehydration. These symptoms could indicate severe complications.
At Hanoi French Hospital’s emergency center, a team of internationally trained doctors and nurses is available 24/7, providing accurate diagnosis and clinical assessment to minimize complications for patients, including:
