When do you need an ear, nose, and throat endoscopy?
Last update 01/02/2024 - 09:52
An ear, nose, and throat (ENT) endoscopy is a method that employs a specialized endoscope with a bright light and a tiny camera at the tip to be inserted deep into the nooks and crannies of the ear, nose, and throat regions.
According to Associate Professor Dr. Vo Thanh Quang, Deputy General Director and Head of the Ear Nose Throat Department at Hanoi French Hospital: "ENT endoscopy allows doctors to see the condition in very deep areas of the ear, nose, and throat with optic tubes measuring only 2-3 mm."
“The endoscopic images inside will be enlarged and displayed on a TV screen. This helps specialist doctors observe directly, identify the location and extent of damage, thereby aiding in accurately diagnosing the causes of any disease and selecting appropriate treatment methods."
ENT endoscopy is performed if you have the following symptoms:
- Ear pain, ringing in the ears, ear discharge, itchy ears and hearing loss
- Symptoms of sinusitis such as headaches, runny nose and sneezing
- Nasal congestion worsening when lying down. Stuffy nose, green nasal discharge
- When you have sinusitis endoscopy is used for diagnosis. Several causes may be detected, such as deviated septum, hypertrophy of nasal concha, and abnormal structure of nasal cavity
- Nosebleeds: Endoscopy helps detect nosebleeds, identify bleeding points, and perform procedures to stop the bleeding
- Hoarseness or shortness of breath
- Endoscopy helps detect throat masses, early detection of throat, and larynx cancer
- Abnormalities in the ear, nose, and throat
Dr. Quang advises that if patients experience symptoms related to the ear, nose, and throat, they should see a doctor for advice and consider whether endoscopic diagnosis is necessary. This can be used to detect:
- Foreign bodies inside the ear, nose, or throat
- Suspected diseases such as tumors, and cancer in the throat or larynx
- Diseases related to the ear: Outer ear inflammation, and middle ear inflammation, ear tumors, perforated eardrum, ringing in the ears, and deafness
- Diseases related to the nose: Acute or chronic sinusitis, nasal concha hypertrophy, deviated septum, tumors, and cancers in the nasal cavity
- Diseases related to the throat: Pharyngitis, tonsillitis, laryngitis, vocal cord inflammation, throat abnormalities, snoring...
Early-stage treatment will bring optimal results and prevent dangerous complications.
