Colon cancer - 90% can be treated with early screening
Last update 09/13/2024 - 16:16
According to Globocan, since 2022 there have been 1,142,286 new cases, of colon cancer and 538,167 deaths globally.
In Vietnam, colon cancer ranks as the fourth most common type of cancer, with the incidence rate has been rising rapidly among younger people in recent years.
However, according to Dr. Akiko Tomonari from the Department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, with nearly 20 years of experience caring for thousands of patients from the US, UK, Germany, Japan...: “Most colorectal cancers develop from adenomatous polyps. Polyps are abnormal growths in the lining of the colon and can be detected through a colonoscopy. If detected early and treated at the initial stage, the disease can be cured.”
Dr. Akiko explained that gastrointestinal cancers often progress silently and are difficult to detect. So, one should not wait for symptoms to appear before visiting the hospital.
Early screening with specialized methods at the hospital allows for the timely and accurate diagnosis of gastrointestinal cancers, providing the best chance for effective treatment and increasing the success rate for patients.
For individuals in the average-risk group, the recommended age to start screening for esophageal, stomach, and colorectal cancers is currently between 45 to 50. In cases where there is a higher risk of colorectal cancer, screening should begin at a younger age.
After the initial screening, the doctor will recommend the timing of the next screening based on the results and the patient's personal and family medical history.
As one of the leading international hospitals in Vietnam, Hanoi French Hospital brings together a team of internationally trained doctors with many years of experience, including:
